Bookbinding Basics
No dates scheduled at this time for this class. Please inquire if you would like to offer it at your location.

In this six-week version of [Bookbinding I], you'll learn the basics of bookbinding in three traditional structures. Class opens with an overview and discussion of different binding structures, the anatomy of the book, and the materials and tools fundamental to craft bookbinding. We’ll discuss the basic toolkit, the importance of paper grain, and how to fold paper and prepare signatures for sewing. The instructor offers a thorough, hands-on approach to learning about bookbinding. Focusing on a traditional sewn structure, we’ll sew multiple signatures on linen tapes and then build a cover for the textblock for the first structure. We’ll continue with this structure, but we’ll learn ways to vary it (such as sewing on cords, styles of quick endbands, and ways of using a variety of bookcloths and papers). Last, you’ll practice the techniques you learned by making a binding that combines them in your own way. This class is the equivalent of [Bookbinding I].
