Artist Books are a wonderfully diverse genre and my work is much the same. I'm fascinated by structures and boxes, both traditional and invented. Most of the books included here have some unique sculptural or spacial element to them.

Description:
The focal themes of this series centered on the surface, texture, and richness of lichen and moss. Through stenciled monoprints using hand cut and lasercut paper, often with a depth of 6-8 layers of cutouts, I explored methods to convey the intricate textural nuances inherent in lichen and moss at a macro level. By using color and layered monoprints, the pieces take on a visual depth with color palettes that reference the brilliance of these organisms in the natural world.

The handcrafted paper background frame creates a colorful portal, imbuing every print with a tangible three-dimensional vibrancy. The prints beneath are revealed using meticulously overbeaten and retted abaca paper sheets, along with a cut 3/4” raised window panel, lending the entire surface an intentionally unrefined, raw, and distressed texture.

These prints' concepts and visual elements draw inspiration from a rich tapestry of sources. Primarily influenced by the captivating botanical illustrations that adorned the pages of historical works spanning the early 1800s to the mid-1900s. Beyond the pages of old volumes, my exploration extended to the natural world, with invigorating hikes through the picturesque front range region in the vicinity of Denver. These outdoor excursions provided firsthand encounters with flora that served as a muse for the prints, infusing them with a genuine connection to the living subjects.

Moreover, my creative journey led me to the University of Colorado Museum Herbarium. There, the treasure trove of preserved specimens unfolded an array of textures, forms, and intricacies that found their way into the imagery. The museum's meticulously cataloged collections offered a profound glimpse into the diverse botanical world, nurturing the authenticity of the prints.
