Artist Books are a wonderfully diverse genre and my work is much the same. I'm fascinated by structures and boxes, both traditional and invented. Most of the books included here have some unique sculptural or spacial element to them.

Inspired by four women naturalists of the 1900s, this swing panel accordion binding was produced in continuation of the series. This prototype is a one-of-a-kind book with digitally printed panels. The swing panel accordion binding is laser cut on each main panel and allows the book to move within the frame of the book, like a pop-up. The artwork was digitally designed and letterpress printed in 5 colors 2-sided for this edition.

The four women featured in the narrative are: Mary Farnham Miller, Elizabeth Gertrude Knight Britton, Matilda Knowles, and Elizabeth C. Wright. The front side of the swing-panel accordion gives a brief poetic biography of the women and their fields of expertise. The back panels of each woman’s biography are a layered digital print with silhouette imagery of the species the women researched and published work relating to.
