Artist Books are a wonderfully diverse genre and my work is much the same. I'm fascinated by structures and boxes, both traditional and invented. Most of the books included here have some unique sculptural or spacial element to them.

About the Narrative:

Welcome to a world of the minuscule; the quiet, unassuming world of moss and lichen. This journey began with the intention to explore the microscopic wonders that elude the casual observer. Inspired by several contemporary women biologists and bryologists, and their study of moss and lichen, I quickly became captivated by these deceptively simple exteriors, the fiercely guard secrets of their vascular intricacies, and the minute details that differentiate species. Seeking to delve into this microscopic universe beyond the women, this project has deepened my understanding of the interconnectedness of lichen, specifically to the Colorado landscape. It exposed me to the complexities of how these lichens intertwine with their hosts chemically, biologically, and environmentally.

In the arc of this creative journey, it was the women scientists who initially ignited a spark of curiosity with their biographical endeavors. However, as the narrative unfolded, it was the lichen and moss that catalyzed a profound shift. This transformed the journey into a voyage of personal exploration, hopefully transcending its original scope.

About the Production of the Book:

This edition was written, designed, printed, and bound by Rhiannon Alpers of Gazelle and Goat Press in Denver, Colorado. Using a combination of wood type, polymer plates, and laser cutting, the artist collaged and decorated the book by hand. Field collection specimen panels are illustrated with a combination of watercolors, inks, and natural pigments. The oversized Latin taxonomy specimen names are mono-printed using wood type and alternative ink processes. The handmade lace paper chapter enclosures are made using over-beaten abaca pulp, wall-sprayed for a textural effect. Wherever possible, the materials and media used are documented with the specimen records themselves for reference.

Deluxe multi-level clamshell box includes FieldworkL Ladies of Lichenology, 10x magnification loupe, and 5 lichen/moss specimens. To ensure conservation, culture tubes containing the specimens have been collected and preserved according to current herbarium standards. The magnification loupe has been also included for closer examination.
