Most of the sculptures have been made of over-beaten abaca or recycled lokta paper and the inner structure is made with bone or rattan vine. I use soft handmade armatures to create the structures and then wrap handmade paper on them while the paper is still wet from sheet formation.
There are several new works in the letterpress section of my site that are made of distressed and aged abaca.
Abaca or Manila Hemp is a leaf fiber, a member of the banana family, and makes an extremely strong pulp with high tear and tensile strength. Lokta is made from the barks of the Lokta bush (its western name is Daphne Cannabina or Daphne Papyracea), mostly found amongst conifers or deciduous trees. The lokta fiber is very long and textured, making the paper extremely resistant and durable.
