Short Course Description: Collecting the objects found around us and in nature is something that is engrained in many of our art practices. This class will allow students to utilize these objects in building their own cabinet of curiosities as a miniature specimen box.
This 2 session course focuses on showcasing an individuals’ visual collection of natural curiosities in a truly one of a kind miniature enclosure structure. The completed artist specimen structure will include a unique hardcover enclosure with an internal frame and inset decorative panel measuring 3 x 4.5 x 1/2 “ in size. Using an assemblage of historic illustrations, found objects, altered book components, and natural artifacts, students will explore boundless possibilities for adding found/handmade materials and written content.
The first short session will be to prepare all the items, answer questions, show examples and resources, and create your internal frame piece for covering.
The second session will be an interactive demo on covering the frame, creating the cover and finalizing the piece once your completed artist specimen structure is ready.
