Workshop Description: Small boxes can hold big wonders—perfect for safeguarding artist book creations, treasures, and field findings. This two-day weekend workshop combines bookbinding and boxmaking, guiding students through the creation of a hand-sewn hardcover book and an enclosure—a drawer box style matchbox—to house it. Together, these elements form a beautiful and functional set, full of creative potential.
The book will be built using multiple signatures and sewn with a traditional link stitch. The hardcover will be wrapped in a combination of bookcloth and decorative paper. Designed to remain flexible for content, this structure is ideal for writing, collage, mark-making, and image transfers—either during class or later at home.
This workshop is welcome to all levels and will explore the principles of multi-component box construction and discover how these techniques apply to other practical box forms students can create at home. From the more intermediate student, the interior tray can include a divided compartment, allowing each set to become a one-of-a-kind treasure.
Basic bookbinding experience is recommended, including measuring, cutting, gluing, and turn-ins—all of which apply to both book & boxmaking techniques. This foundation course will allow students build on what they know, have an opportunity to explore creative aspects of the project while honing their technical skills. If you're unsure whether the class is suitable for your current skill level, please don't hesitate to reach out.
