Workshop Description

This two-day immersive, intermediate-level workshop offers an in-depth exploration of papermaking using harvested Oregon plants—from raw fiber to finished sheets. Working with locally sourced materials from community gardens and farms, students examine how regional plant species, seasonal timing (July harvest), and small-scale production choices directly shape the character of handmade paper.

Designed for students with prior papermaking experience, the workshop moves through the full process at a focused, collaborative pace. Participants prepare and cook fibers, process and beat pulp, pull sheets, and experiment with drying techniques while working with a wide range of Pacific Northwest plant fibers. Emphasis is placed on observation, comparison, and refinement, allowing students to better understand fiber behavior and material outcomes.

Each participant produces a unique body of handmade papers and may optionally assemble a swatchbook documenting fiber recipes, plant species, and process notes for future reference. Enrollment is limited to six students, allowing for hands-on guidance, shared problem-solving, and meaningful engagement with the material.

Optional Harvesting Experience

For those local to Oregon and interested in experiencing the process from the very beginning, the workshop includes an optional plant-harvesting day with our growing partners during the first week of June. This additional day offers insight into plant selection, harvesting methods, and early-stage decision-making that inform later papermaking outcomes.

Physical Engagement & Accessibility

Please note that this is a hands-on, physically active workshop involving standing, lifting small bundles of fiber, and moving between workstations. Students will be actively working together throughout the two days. Accommodations can be made, and participants are encouraged to reach out via the contact page to discuss whether this course is a good fit.

Location & Logistics

The workshop is held at Gazelle and Goat Studio in Portland, Oregon.

PDX Airport is approximately 15 minutes away by car, and several host accommodations are within a 5–15 minute walk. Grocery stores, public transportation, outdoor activities, and local shopping are all nearby.

Transportation, accommodation, and additional activity recommendations are available via email or the contact form. Please include your location and any relevant creative goals or restrictions when reaching out.

Additional Context

One of the most compelling aspects of working with local plants and regional growing partners is the element of change and chance. Each season brings new variations in color, quantity, and texture. After more than fifteen years of teaching this course, I am still surprised by what each harvest offers—and by how the research continues to evolve.

I also maintain an ongoing interest in the dye properties and scientific research surrounding local plants. When interest and time allow, the workshop may include an informal exploration of these intersections.
