In conversation with the themes of the juried show “Material Conversations”, these works explore how paper and other materials shape our understanding of the natural world. Fiber becomes form, surface, and story through processes that transform observations of plants and lichens into layered prints and sculptural paper forms.
The first series is a collaboration between Rhiannon Alpers and artist Catherine Alice Michaelis. Together, they investigate layered geometric forms through linoleum carvings of plants, creating an open edition of prints. The imagery draws on the pentad and the five-petaled forms of fruiting flowers native to the Pacific Northwest. Through the layering and rotation of carved blocks, ink, and paper, the prints bring together shape, color, sacred geometry, and transparency.
The second series grows out of Alpers' ongoing research and experimentation with the intricate forms of lichen species found in Oregon. Through handmade paper and papercutting, the work examines these organisms at a macro scale, revealing their complex structures and subtle details. While the floral prints investigate the geometry and patterns found in nature, the lichen works invite closer attention to the forms and textures of an often-overlooked natural world.
