As the first in a series of artist books, this book is both a experimentation and a formation of structural frameworks used in later books.
This series employs systems of cryptography, mapping, and later Polaroid image transfers to investigate the relationship between landscape, memory, and personal narrative. Rooted in the terrain of West Coast National Parks in the Joshua Tree and Santa Barbara areas, the works chart the artist’s solo explorations through a synthesis of text, symbol, and image.
Developed during undergraduate studies in book arts, the project reflects an early inquiry into authorship and the confidence to construct and share one’s own stories. Influenced by the intricate cartographies and coded visual languages of Timothy Ely, the series merges an interest in mathematics and symbolic communication with the tactile and conceptual possibilities of the book form.
Each volume functions as both map and cipher—layering fragmented narratives, recurring motifs of travel, and metaphors of self-discovery. Through these interwoven elements, the work situates the artist’s internal landscape within the broader geography of the desert, revealing how the act of making can serve as a process of translation between place, language, and identity.
