Ochre Series Explorations and Statement:

This body of work explores ochre (ocher) as both color and metaphor: a visible trace of deeper, often hidden geological processes. Formed where iron-rich rocks weather and become exposed, ochre carries fragments of the systems from which it emerged. While its chemistry can suggest the presence of metals within its origin, ochre does not offer certainty or measure. Instead, it acts as a signal—pointing toward what lies beneath without fully revealing it. Through artist books, collected specimens, printmaking, and material experimentation, this project considers ochre as residue, evidence, and a record of relationships between plant, mineral, landscape, and time.

Artwork Statement:
Ochre Color Experiments: Version 3

This multi-book, tiered-box artist book investigates ochre as both color and material trace. The work consists of two books housed within a three-tiered tray box with a magnetic wrap-around closure. Each layer contains found and altered specimens that preserve associations between plant, mineral, and landscape—revealing ochre as a spectrum of traces, signals, and meanings drawn from the natural world.

Layered monoprints unfold across accordion-board panels, paired with letterpress and handwritten plant and color specimen cards on the reverse. Within the central tray, natural plant specimens and earth pigments intermingle, exploring the subtle tonal shifts and expansive range contained within the naming of ochre. In a separate tray, a sculptural artist book with an altered wood cover contains research notes, material fragments, and paper samples, documenting the textures, weight, and subtle tonalities explored throughout the project’s multi-year research process.
