Workshop Description:
Join me for a one-day, immersive exploration of papermaking, where we'll dive in with local plant fibers to forming finished sheets. Offered in partnership with our community gardens and our own gardens, this course gives students a chance to try papermaking with plants on a small scale.
One of the most compelling aspects of working with plants is the element of change and chance. Every season brings new variations in color, quantity, and texture, and after teaching this course for more than fifteen years, I’m still surprised and delighted by what each harvest offers.
Over the course of the day, students will learn aspects of papermaking process: preparing vats of fibers, pulling sheets, pressing the sheets and drying techniques. Participants will work with a variety of fibers—both individually and in combination—to create a unique collection small of handmade paper sheets. At the end of the workshop, the papers will be assembled by the class into the drier for 2-3 days. Once dry the completely finished papers will be mailed to students, or available for local pickup.
This is a hands-on, physically active class involving standing, lifting small bundles, and moving between workstations. Accommodations can be made; please feel free to reach out through the contact page if you’re new to papermaking or would like to discuss whether this course is a good fit.
Please note: This workshop can also include an optional plant-harvesting day with our growing partners during the first week of June for those who want to experience the process from the very beginning.
