Workshop Description:
Join me for a two-day, immersive exploration of papermaking, where we'll dive in from harvesting local plants to forming finished sheets. Offered in partnership with our community gardens and our own gardens (optionall for students to bring specific plants for trying), this course gives students the fully engaged look at papermaking with plants on a small scale.
One of the most compelling aspects of working with plants is the element of change and chance. Every season brings new variations in color, quantity, and texture, and after teaching this course for more than fifteen years, I’m still surprised and delighted by what each harvest offers.
Over the two days, students will learn each stage of the papermaking process: preparing and cooking fibers, processing and beating, pulling sheets, and drying techniques. Participants will work with a variety of fibers—both individually and in combination—to create a unique collection of handmade papers. At the end of the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to assemble a swatchbook of the fibers and the creative sheets you’ve made. Finished papers will be mailed after they dry, or available for local pickup.
This is a hands-on, physically active class involving standing, lifting small bundles, and moving between workstations. Accommodations can be made; please feel free to reach out through the contact page if you’re new to papermaking or would like to discuss whether this course is a good fit.
Please note: This workshop also includes an optional plant-harvesting day with our growing partners during the first week of June for those who want to experience the process from the very beginning.
